I read on the wiki that discoveries are kind of pointless right now but this is very cool. I didn't know my dwarves could further knowledge in their societies, I like this a lot, even for just role play.

I'm so excited for adventure mode to make it's return! Do you have any favorite moments from adventure mode?

So... I just hit magma... bah... I looked for it! I dug like 150 levels until I got some warm, and now I realize I have no idea what to do with it.
Any advice on how to handle the thing?
Thanks!

Hello everyone, I’ve seen a lot of my friends play these types of games (mainly rimworld) and saw the complexity of this game and decided to pick it up. While it is very interesting, it’s also very daunting to me.

My guess is that I’m more used to rpg and fps games with a set goal of some sort whereas this game is very open ended with what to do. I am overwhelmed by all of the options in the game and I am wondering if there are others that feel the same. If so, how have you overcome this feeling or learned to enjoy the game?

An idea I have is to just go with the in game tutorials and see what happens without worrying about the outcome, maybe I’m caught up with doing everything optimally when I should just enjoy the experience.

Any ideas are appreciated, thanks!

It was quite the battle.

And it just gets worse

And it just gets worse. I tried to wait them out, but even when they left a few stayed behind, lurking in the treetops:

Undead trees

I knocked over one tree with a ballista, and those creatures left voluntarily. I took about thirty casualties clearing out the second tree.

A year later, the horde returns, and right now I'm ignoring them because there's lots of work inside the fortress that needs done, and I've got a decent tree farm up and going. I'm thinking it's time for Operation FTW, but I'll have to wait until they leave to set up it for the inevitable third return.

Obviously giant creature war breeding is the goal. Any great candidates that are from good biomes for taming?

Do cavern invaders still cause save corruption/become completely unmanageable?

Also since it's been a long time I'm thinking of setting a lower population limit and taking my time. Do any of you have recommended settings for enemy invasions etc based in a ~50 dwarf cap?

This episode we talk about version 50.11 of Dwarf Fortress, and 50.11-r2 of DF Hack.

And any tips for potentially improving it?

I'm currently getting about 45 FPS with ~115 dwarfs. (limited to 150 max)

My world world was generated with 250 years history and has 1 fort that I retired after 6 years or so. 4x4 embark.

45 FPS is fine to play but it drops quickly after too many more dwarfs rock up.

Tip: If you have visitors wandering around your base, you can go under the knowledge task to see what all books they've read in their lifetime and what kind of books they are. That way, you can search for somewhat unusual types like novels, chronicles, cultural histories, biographies, autobiographies, dictionaries, dialogues, and etc.

I really wish this functionality was on the written objects screen. Right now you just have to go off of the title. This work, unfortunately, wasn't written in my fortress and we don't have a copy of it, either. That said, I do have a pair of autobiographies and some cultural histories.

What I would like to do is figure out a way to reliably make dwarves produce biographies. Unfortunately, I haven't figured out how. The only requirement that I know of for a dwarf to produce a biography is knowledge of the biography topic, which can be obtained either from them reading a book on the subject (easy) to discovering it themselves (very, very hard and random). After that, I don't know if they have to be assigned to a library or not to actually produce the biography.

That sounds simple, but the thing is that dwarves are practically-minded. They seem to prefer to write manuals and guides about topics they know than novels, biographies, and etc. What if you had a dwarf that knew only of biographies and of no other topics, though? They might write one guide on the subject of writing biographies, but will they stop writing guides after that and start writing biographies?

The problem is, once you have a big library, dwarves tend to swarm it and learn about all the topics. It's hard to pick and dwarf that's "unpolluted," so to speak, and I suspect that if they've avoided the library that much, they'll be poor biographers anyway.

One idea I've had is the Dwarven Monastery. We take kids that just turned 18, which haven't had a chance to read books yet, and slap them in a private, sealed off room with writing materials, food, and drink. Toss in a bookshelf and make a tiny library only they can access. Assign them as a scholar, and throw down a book on biographies as inspiration. Then, see what happens.

Note that what kind of books your dwarves write has literally no gameplay impact. This is just for Armok and maybe internet points. Damn it, I want my dwarves to have quality literature!

Perhaps the best part of Dwarf Fortress is creating and sharing stories. Share yours below!

Starting a new fort series, thought I'd share it to the fediverse.

I'm also looking for fediverse alternatives for streamers ... I'm not really concerned about monetization or anything like that, just looking for alternate places to host my content and someday break the youtube chains.

Currently I am still using the old masterwork and LazyNewb versions of the game as I tend to play keyboard only. There was an update post where Tarn was looking to add keyboard only support back in, but I can't find any updates since then. Has their been any updates on the progress of that support? Or are there any mods that open up keyboard only gameplay like the old versions?

I'm happy to learn new hotkeys, I'm aware the old ones weren't optimal, but I just can't get used to playing DF with a mouse.

This is a timelapse of the construction of the main building of Ikûl Tikis, a Ziggurat dedicated to the god of death of this world. The fortress is populated only by vampires after this same god cursed a dwarf in its temple.

Each frame is a season, covering around seven years. During this timespan, the world progressed through two different ages: The Age of Heroes and The Golden Age after the last titan and the last roc attacked the dwarves building the Ziggurat. More renders:

In real life, Ziggurat are large temples built by Summerians. Some dubious sources says that they worshiped gods of mountains, and when living away from mountains they would build these temples as literal mountains, which is the most dwarven thing ever.

The 3D export was done with Vox Uristi (my own software) and rendered with MagicaVoxel. If you have any question or suggestion about Vox Uristi or the fortress, please go ahead!

edit: I can't manage to upload the timelapse itself - oops, it can be seen on reddit though
