It's because as the hot air rises, cool air comes in from all sides of the fire. Your body blocks that air from one side, so the prevailing current of cool air feeding the fire is biased towards you and it carries the smoke with it.
Imma sell a "smoke diverter" that's a wide piece of cardboard on a stand. Put it opposite your seat at the fire, boom, no more smoke.

Then you put out the tacticool camo version and the upscale material version that's just made out of aluminum.
And don’t forget the designer one, which just has a Supreme logo on it yet costs 30x more
