In our APK teardown, we discovered strings of code that suggest Google Messages will automatically upgrade MMS chats to RCS.

That's fine as long as they don't break my RCS for being rooted again. Which I'm sure they would.

I don’t hate this. MMS is awful.

Is RCS still a Google-driven scheme? I liked using Signal and its ability for messaging high quality images but it dropped support for nonusers.

Google’s the main backer but it’s technically an open standard. Apple is implementing support in iOS 18 too, reluctantly. Google also has non-standard extensions on top of it like e2e encryption. I wish they would standardize it but that’s a pretty important feature and maybe it’s ok that they brought it out before it could become standard.

What do you mean?

It doesn’t support sms anymore. You can only message Signal users.

I could have phrased this much better, thanks for interpreting for me haha. That is exactly what I meant.

Here in Singapore MMS was discontinued several years ago as people had left for other messaging platforms like WhatsApp long ago.

I've got RCS disabled so hopefully it doesn't. I got a new Android phone which had it unfortunately enabled by default which caused a bunch of messages to not reach their destination.

Bold of them to assume I'll use their shitty app
