such as how much of the world is making sacrifices to stop buying gas from Russia but India’s just undermining their good intentions for profit

I might disagree with most things this government does, but I can't deny the fact that's something overwhelmingly popular with Indians (including me)

We literally have people suffering from malnutrition in this country, people who still die of hunger, you can't expect us to not buy cheap oil from Russia. Sorry, we will buy oil from everyplace where it is cheap, we can alleviate suffering of our own people by money and we will try to do it as best as we can.

I know there is innovation but nothing major springs to mind

There is NO INNOVATION. There are no discoveries happening here. R&D budget and the budget for education is peanuts, there isn't much innovation happening in India and the innovation that does happen, happens in handful of universities by students who could not afford to move out to a better country which would fund their research.

a product of John Oliver.

that guy is almost always biased as hell and lies to make people he disagrees with seem bad, but damn, he went wayyy to easy on modi even though he dislikes Modi! Idk why!?. He attributed things to modi which weren't his own (like rations and the economic progress) and generally was misinformed. Terrible research team! I could have given him better points! and his delivery was subpar! The last Modi episode was better, maybe he was trying to gain a wider audience in India as otherwise we would have banned the show (We love Free speech here in India)

I wonder in what ways does India believe they are the world leader of anything?

They see the outliers in this system and think that is the norm. i.e., Out of 1.4 billion people, there must be many people who are extremely successful abroad (and are very famous) and Indians think that is the norm and the fact that there are some so many successful people abroad shows that our culture is superior. It really makes sense if you stop thinking about it lol.

And there are some random events happening in such a big country that if you are in an ecosystem of Indian uncles or you haven't really grown up from metal age of 12, you begin to think the world revolves around us and we are a superpower.

Is this correct?

Yeah, pretty much. I am not sure what you mean by it isn't the biggest democracy, it kinda is the biggest democracy, but people place way too much emphasis on it. People don't seem to have a mind of their own, they act in groups and are very tribal, so it's probably not the most effective democracy.

Probably most countries/cultures think this of themselves

being accepting of your own nationality is good, but I have a problem with people being too proud of shitty things. We are too ok with who we are as a country and that's not conducive to progress.

[-] [email protected] 21 points 1 week ago

culturally they either serve others or expect to be served

Ohh yes, that's a nice observation. I have seen people who would just crumble when they encounter someone they perceive to be of a higher class (not caste), but I have also seen people who are "I own this place guys"

It probably talks a lot abt the socio-economic circumstances of their upbringing. Most including me belong to the people who become servile when they encounter authority/class, I am trying to change that tho.

I hate the servility I see around me, people think so less of themselves and way too highly of the corrupt bureaucrat, I have seen what kind of people this culture creates and it's pretty gloomy!

[-] [email protected] 65 points 1 week ago

They stare and get too close and touch you all the time. I kept having people touch my shoulders and try and touch my face when I was in public or queuing

This is more of a culture thing, I used to do it a lot when I was younger (it's considered friendly)

[-] [email protected] 22 points 1 week ago

interestingly, almost everyone in the comments have been as calm headed and rational as you. There is not one emotionally charged reply which is devoid of real answers. This is pretty good!

[-] [email protected] 27 points 1 week ago

I agree, but we have crossed a limit between self-love and self-obsession. It's hindering progress because people in India are not even ready to acknowledge what's wrong with our priorities, culture and way of living and are calling anyone who questions their way of life anti-national. Sometimes, it feels like I am living in Eritrea or something!

Woah dudE!

Reminds me of the starting scene in Lord of War

[-] [email protected] 1 points 9 months ago

I now know the cause of this. I have scrcpy, syncthing and KDE connect working in the background. So, if I upload something from one device to another, it gets treated as upload using data bandwidth and it gets counted, even if I am not uploading it to the internet.

The comparison is fair, but I thought vnstat only measured data bandwidth (i.e., which is used over the internet) but it's counting file sharing too. So, the measurements are haywire.

Well, my friend, he's kinda poor he can't afford some books and some streaming services, so he pirates. He pirate books, audiobook and videos and other stuff. Sometimes he buys books he likes a lot out of loyalty to the author (yeah, I don't understand it either), he likes to read physical books, but yeah, if he hates the author or just wants to skim through it, he will download the book.

He usually doesn't like to pirate from small companies or professors who are trying to make a living by selling books, but from millionaires & plenty of mega corps which already have loads of money, he feels like it's the right move to pirate

Also, have you ever noticed that you have felt that the value of a product has decreased just because you didn't pay for it, thus you are less interested to read it? i.e., had you paid for the book, you would have more likely read that book.

He says he will buy stuff when his time is more valuable than money, let's all hope that day is soon.

What are your piracy habits?

https://pirates-forum.org/Thread-ThePirateBay-Want-Trusted-VIP-Status-Pink-Green-Skull-See-Here

I already know, but I feel like this post belonged here. Trust the skulls, I have usually found original seeders seeding the torrent alone for years at time (1 seeder) and they get the job done.

Green Skull, Pink Skull, Number of seeders column (what else?) are the things you should care for while downloading torrents.

I for the first time got to know about web seeds, these seed at maximum download speed your device can handle (like usenet) and if the torrent has no seeders at all these can be useful. I have seen their use in https://archive.org/ when I was downloading a Librivox audiobook. What are the disadvantages of web seeds? Would the government be able to shut these down with relative ease as unlike normal seeders, they are centralized. Also, is there a way to use these? I mean, is there a service which will seed through web seeds what I don't want to be seen seeding?

PS: Librivox is a free audio book site for books in public domain and you can legally get them after visiting their website. I love Librivox!

You lovely people have given me a lot of great FOSS apps and I thank you for your suggestions

Although this feature is available in new Transmission 4, I am using Transmission 3 and I can use flatpak to download the latest and the greatest, but yeah, I choose to just go for other apps for now. If you are looking to make transmission work, this comment is for you, again to repeat, flatpak transmission is the best transmission if you want to stick to it.

  1. Deluge you are as beautiful as I first found you 😇 comment [Installing this next time I distrohop]
  2. qb which also has this functionality.
  3. steamio
  4. btfs
  5. webtorrent installing now
  6. kodi + elementum I don't like KODI :( So, I don't think so

edit: I am using Debian Stable, so though I have Transmission the transmission I have is the older one released in 2020. So, unfortunately, I can't use the latest greatest thing (unless I use flatpaks), I have however chosen to use qb and I like it as well! Thank you all

Two uses I think I would have from this app

  1. I can see the quality of the file as I am downloading it and I can remove it if I don't like it.
  2. I can obviously watch the movie or show I want to watch without waiting for it to be downloaded.

I am using Transmission now and I love it, but yeah, this would be a good addition.

PS: I do realize this would most likely work only for torrents with good number of seeders. ****

  1. I was going through this wonderful thread https://lemmy.ml/post/4540882 and found many of you talking about discord as it's a crime against knowledge for not allowing indexing on it. I think we are talking about indexing by search engines like DDG and Google here and I know that discord questions don't show up in search results and it's somewhat of a closed source system, which is terrible. Now, is there no way to index these chats on discord?

  2. Also, is Matrix a viable alternative to discord and are Matrix chats indexable and are they indexed on google or duckduckgo? And are Matrix public chats indexed? Does Matrix have features such as creating a thread to ask question and somewhat of a forum like structure that discord has?

Unfortunately, I know for a fact that Matrix would probably not replace Discord as Linux would not replace Windows, although both Linux and Matrix are definitely better and more open. There are not enough people on Matrix when compared to Discord and this will never happen unless Discord messes up big (look at you reddit)

  1. I know this is not a support forum, but a short question, what is the alternative to https://discord.com/servers, here discord lists all it's public servers and you can find one which suits your interest and join in. I haven't found the equivalent to this for Matrix yet.

I am talking about people born in USA or who committed crimes in USA after having lived here for a while, who when indicted/convicted of crimes successfully managed to flee the country and evade the Justice System forever.

Edward Snowden comes to mind, I don't completely know what he did, I know he exposed the US govt spying on it's own citizens and that's good, but apparently he put lives in danger and blah.. blah.. blah.. (I don't know if that's true, if it is, then idk, I might not like him anymore)

Yeah, but who else other than Snowden

I was watching House M.D. and it showed two Italian brothers who were gangsters and involved in illegal activity. Like a crime family, Godfather type.

So, I know where the stereotype originates from. Italians came from Italy to the shores of America as migrants in the last century and were able to make a life of their own, but a small sliver (I think) of the community did involve themselves in not so legal activities. I thought it was the thing of the past that Italians were disproportionately involved in Criminal activities and I had though they got mixed in the American melting pot and probably are not disproportionately involved in crimes anymore. So, is the stereotype of Italian gangsters still true to this day (I know probably to a lesser degree?)

I must say I am not white/American/Italian or anyone who has anything to do with these groups. I have never seen an Italian in real life and I don't hold any prejudices against or for them.

edit: I like matrix.io more than discord. I will try to stick with matrix.io but yeah, discord has more people in it though :(

I have many general questions I would like to throw at people about Linux, these don't require the attention of a post. So, are there any good Linux chat rooms out there? Discord is ok, Telegram or any other open-source or partially open-source service with good interaction is better.

rant: I don't realize why some people hate Telegram so much, it's far better than whatsapp and more widespread than other Chatrooms and Servers. And I like the privacy I get on Telegram. I can send a message to anyone without them knowing who I am! That's amazing!

Thank you for your help!

I heard that in some countries you can get fined for using torrents or seeding beyond a certain limit (Das Deutschlandlied intensifies). How to seed so that no idiot government would get hands on the fact that you are downloading torrents? I am pretty sure I can do this using Tails OS but what else? Is there a safe way to SEED TILL YOU BLEED?

It would have been nice if we (someone but not me) could have created a website where we could read a particular country's law and how to torrent safely from there.

All religions have it's own myths, own stories, own set of values. And these are/were good stories, I mean, even though they are not true, they are certainly interesting. You won't feel bored by it.

Harry Potter has the same effect on people, like, why should I take Harry Potter seriously, why do I care what happens after Dumbledore dances with Snape (won't give actual spoilers :')

I mean, it doesn't make sense to me. Why do I care so much about a soap opera that I am watching. Harry Potter is the product of just one brilliant woman's imagination. It has no real value on my life. I have no real motivation to read that other than the fact that I like it and I want to know. Harry Potter is somewhat irrelevant to my life, than why does it or any other good story capture our imagination?

Why do I care what the next season of House M.D. entails? Why? What should I care if he dies or lives? Why :')?

edit 2: thank you to everyone who replied.

edit: What type of leechers are acceptable and what kind are not acceptable according to you?

It's amazing how much I need others to validate my actions. I wish I could live guilt free without this. But, I can't, so here I am. Good people of lemmy, judge me

I don't have a lot of internet. I get like 1.5 GB of internet a dafy and it's 4G, not truly 4g, more like 0.2 mbps to 4mbps at max and I don't seed after I am done downloading my torrents. If I had greater amounts of Data, like limitless data or something like 2000GBs per month or something, I would constantly be seeding, but I don't. Are my actions morally justifiable? I feel guilty when that last seeder seeds me all I need and when someone needs another seeder, I turn off my seeding :(

I mean, I don't want to do it, but with the data I have, I can't afford to seed much, what should I do?

I might take some time to reply to you, I ain't abandoning the thread btw, is https://sh.itjust.works/ down? Just asking, I could not access it today

PS: I seed books and stuff like that. I mean, they are only like 1 or 2 mbs and I seed em when no one else is. But you know other stuff like extra legal videos series, soap operas etc etc are beyond me

Apparently, I just had to give the full path /home/bob/miniconda3/bin/jupyter-notebook works perfectly! Thanks to @[email protected] for solving it for me.

note: which jupyter-notebook returned the address

(base) bob@bob:~
$ which jupyter-notebook
/home/bob/miniconda3/bin/jupyter-notebook

btw, this issue as old as time. Even Jesus had this problem while using Linux :(

Edit 2: I was wrong. It's using bash. I got a echo $SHELL and it was /bin/bash. but even though the jupyter-notebook path has been added to $PATH variable, it just won't execute.

Edit 1: I don't think keyboard shortcuts and menulibre don't use bash shell. After reading logs I realized that it was as if jupyter-notebook wasn't even installed when I am executing through shortcuts and menulibre. I have added the jupyter path variable to .bashrc, the only way this can not work is if the bloody thing isn't running on bash shell.

Terminal log when executed by terminal

Log when executed by a shortcut

/home/bob/jupyter_notebook_unofficial: line 6: jupyter: command not found

Demonstration

Firefox command work perfectly without any problem, but jupyter notebook command which works in terminal doesn't work on either keyboard shortcuts or on menulibre. The file has max permissions to run

Script Copy

#!/bin/bash
jupyter notebook
firefox http://localhost:8888/tree/Documents/Programs

What I have tried

  1. I have tried to run in terminal, not run in terminal on menulibre
  2. I have tried entering these commands in the command column

https://imgur.com/a/Ze2MUqW

 `./jupyter_notebook_unofficial`
    `./home/bob/jupyter_notebook_unofficial`
    `bash jupyter_notebook_unofficial`
    `bash ./jupyter_notebook_unofficial`
    `bash ./home/bob/jupyter_notebook_unofficial`
	`bash /home/bob/jupyter_notebook_unofficial`

I have also tried all this combinations with and without .sh at the end of the file name.

All of these would work on terminal but not as shortcuts or on menulibre.
