What usually happens is the area becomes too rich for the usual folk who have lived there since their birth. Now they can't eat at a restaurant in their own home town.

Actually a little bit of humiliation goes a long way towards diligence when conducting expensive space experiments. Russia used to be the leaders in these fields. The world used to rely on Soviet vehicles for launch. They deserve to be held at a higher standard.

Why don't businesses do away with free and go to a completely paid model?

Let's continue on this path of thinking: Customers already pay using their data. So if you want to show ads you have to pay customers since you are scrapping their data?
