Absolutely. I have no problem displaying a few ads with my content if it results in better content. If it’s done responsibly, which it never is. Instead, it’s always an abusive relationship.

Yea this is the thing I keep saying. Who cares about if you're paying $20 for an app if that's what you want to do. Just remember to help out the instances who are running things to make that app work. I think a lot of people realize this and that's great, but I'm sure some people also don't. So, instead of circlejerking about Sync being $20, it would have been better for make one or two posts days ago with that reminder and leave it be. Instead, we see the circlejerk continuing days later.

Sync is for Android :)

I think they are saying that without the core Lemmy team, there wouldn't be a platform for Sync to build off of (or Kbin, but same thing applies). There's obvious truth in that statement, but I don't think it's a reason to belittle people for being willing to pay for an app. However in OP's case here, (at least without the edit) it does kind of come across as a "fuck you" to the actual platform that Sync is using. Probably not his intention, but perception is reality.

If anything though, we should be reminding people of this and asking them to consider also donating to the continued development of Lemmy or to the running of the instance they use. Not sure why there's this huge circlejerk about people paying for Sync. Let people do what they want...

I don't get why instead of making posts about "Don't use Sync!" no one is saying "Feel free to use and pay for whatever you like! But as a friendly reminder please note that you should also consider helping your instance owners or the core Lemmy team as well."

There's nothing wrong at all with paying for software, and even some will be fine with ads. It has literally nothing to do with anyone else but that person. Let them do them.

Like I say though, I think the thing that should be being said is that the app is not self contained and that these people should seriously consider helping out the other aspects as well if they can. But hey, no, let's just belittle them and push them away instead of welcoming them. I can almost guarantee that the availability of Sync will bring more users to Lemmy that never would have been here otherwise.

I think the “hot take” that needs to be said here - and surprisingly I have not come across it yet - is that it’s totally fine if you’re willing to pay 20 dollars for the app.

However, please remember that the app itself is not self contained. It relies on the hard work of the Lemmy developers and the instance you use staying online. Please consider sending them some money as well down the line. If you get the app for 20 dollars as a one time payment, maybe some future payments - even if considerably smaller - can go towards the latter.

Try installing something from homebrew.

Oh you just want to install this one package here? Ok but let’s update 60 other packages first. Don’t worry, it will only take about one minute. Per package.

To be fair, Threads is almost certainly built with React Native which always leads to bigger app bundles. Not to say that there isn't anything fishy in there, but that's part of the reason.
