Not "this economy" but 20 years ago, I was unemployed and took a part time job running a computer lab at night at a for profit college.

When I got a regular day job, I kept the lab job for extra money.

So I worked IT from 8 to 5, then the computer lab from 6 to 10, Mon-Thur. Normal job on Fri. Off Sat/Sun.

Fund mental health institutions and make it easier to involuntarily commit people before they buy weapons and go on rampages?

Case after case, you see more red flags than a May Day Parade, but none of it legally actionable or reportable on a background check.

Examples:

"Ramos' social media acquaintances said he openly abused and killed animals such as cats and would livestream the abuse on Yubo.[132] Other social media acquaintances said that he would also livestream himself on Yubo threatening to kidnap and rape girls who used the app, as well as threatening to commit a school shooting.[131] Ramos' account was reported to Yubo, but no action was taken.[131][133]"

"The Florida Department of Children and Families investigated him in September 2016 for Snapchat posts in which he cut both his arms and said he planned to buy a gun. At this time, a school resource officer suggested[92] he undergo an involuntary psychiatric examination under the provisions of the Baker Act. Two guidance counselors agreed, but a mental institution did not.[93] State investigators reported he had depression, autism, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, psychologist Frederick M. Kravitz later testified that Cruz was never diagnosed with autism.[94] In their assessment, they concluded he was "at low risk of harming himself or others".[95] He had previously received mental health treatment, but had not received treatment in the year leading up to the shooting.[96]"

"In a 2013 interview, Peter Lanza (Adam's father) said he suspected his son might have also had undiagnosed schizophrenia in addition to his other conditions. Lanza said that family members might have missed signs of the onset of schizophrenia and psychotic behavior during his son's adolescence because they mistakenly attributed his odd behavior and increasing isolation to Asperger syndrome.[155][162][169][170][171] Because of concerns that published accounts of Lanza's autism could result in a backlash against others with the condition, autism advocates campaigned to clarify that autism is a brain-related developmental disorder rather than a mental illness.[172] The violence Lanza demonstrated in the shooting is generally not seen in the autistic population[173] and none of the psychiatrists he saw detected troubling signs of violence in his disposition.[155]

Lanza appears to have had no contact with mental health providers after 2006. The report from the Office of the Child Advocate stated: "In the course of Lanza's entire life, minimal mental health evaluation and treatment (in relation to his apparent need) was obtained. Of the couple of providers that saw him, only one—the Yale Child Study Center—seemed to appreciate the gravity of (his) presentation, his need for extensive mental health and special education supports, and the critical need for medication to ease his obsessive-compulsive symptoms."[165]"

"In June 2021, Gendron had been investigated for threatening other students at his high school by the police in Broome County.[20][60][66] A teacher had asked him about his plans after the school year, to which Gendron responded, "I want to murder and commit suicide."[67] He was referred to a hospital for mental health evaluation and counseling but was released after being held for a day and a half.[20][66][68]

Gendron told police that he was merely joking; however, Gendron later wrote online that this was actually a well-executed bluff.[65][69] He was not charged in connection with the incident since, according to investigators, he had not made a specific enough threat to warrant further action.[66][69] The New York State Police did not seek an order from a state court to remove guns from Gendron's possession.[69][70] The mental health evaluation was not an involuntary commitment, which would have prohibited him from buying guns under federal law.[69]"

Interesting in that, flipping it around, there doesn't appear to be another country with as large a disparity.

Armenia is #1 with 55% women:

Learning new things and helping other people learn new things.

Did you know the poems of Emily Dickinson can be read to the tune of the Yellow Rose of Texas?

Regarded now as one of the most important American poets, only 10 of her 1,800 poems were published in her lifetime.

They didn't just remove story missions and quests and things, they removed entire PLANETS from the game. It was crazy!

Bungie's problem is they don't really want to make a story based looter shooter, they want a free to play PvP gacha engine.

It's better than what Bungie did with Destiny 2... just gutted 1/2 the content from the game, including all the story missions and the first several paid expansions.

They wanted to attract new players with a smaller download size, but the new players come in and go "WTF is going on?"

An ocean going boat isn't for a beginner. I'd stick to a car. :)

A sailing boat is tricky to manage solo, if you're on your own, I'd steer clear.

Yeah, I'm tryin', but have been overloaded recently. :( Wife was in the hospital for 9 days so lots of running back and forth and now I got tapped to moderate a couple of lemmy.world communities. Exciting and exhausting!

This week for me it's:

Action Comics #1058 (Cover A Steve Beach), - Still enjoying all the Dawn of DC Supes stuff.

Alan Scott The Green Lantern #1 (Of 6)(Cover A David Talaski), - 3rd in a set of three following the Wesley Dodds Sandman and Jay Garrick Flash.

Batman The Brave And The Bold #6 (Cover A Simone Di Meo), - I'm just a sucker for a good anthology book.

Captain America #2 (Cover A Jesus Saiz) - #1 got the big thing right with cap. He's always just Steve.

Cerebus In Hell Presents Wild Pigs #1 (One Shot) - My monthly Dave Sim charity donation.

Flash #2 (Cover A Mike Deodato Jr. & Trish Mulvihill), Dawn of DC Flash reboot.

Gone #1 (Cover A Jock Wraparound Variant), - So, if you missed the magazine sized sampler from DSTLRY you might not be aware of this one, hit your local shop and ask for the "Devil's Cut" sampler. New creator owned publisher.

Green Arrow #5 (Of 6)(Cover A Phil Hester), - Feels like I missed some. #5 already? Feels like #3.

Neal Adams Vault Volume 1 SC - RIP Neal Adams. So hang in here, storytime... Late 80s, Adams bails on D.C. and Marvel and fires up his own comic book company called "Continuity Comics". Creates some new characters, writes some stories, then hires other artists to come in and mimic his style. Never really published on time, or even particularly good, but Neal Adams is still Neal Frickin' Adams. This reprints the ACTUAL Adams works, not the later knockoffs. Worth a look if you've never seen it.

Power Girl #2 (Cover A Gary Frank), - One of DCs most under-rated characters.

Rare Flavours #2 (Of 6)(Cover A Filipe Andrade), - Ram V. definitely spins a tale...

Tales Of The Titans #4 (Of 4)(Cover A Nicola Scott), - Final Issue.

Unstoppable Doom Patrol #7 (Of 7)(Cover A Chris Burnham), - Final Issue.

Wonder Woman #1 & 2 - Not sure how I missed Tom King on Wonder Woman.

Fall of X:

Alpha Flight #3 (Of 5)(Cover A Leonard Kirk), -

Jean Grey #3 (Of 4)(Cover A Amy Reeder) -

Ms. Marvel The New Mutant #2 (Of 4)(Cover A Sara Pichelli) -

Uncanny Avengers #3 (Of 5)(Cover A Javier Garron) -

Uncanny Spider-Man #2 (Cover A Tony Daniel) -

COMICLIST: NEW COMIC BOOK RELEASES LIST FOR 10/11/2023

Had to take a break for a few weeks to deal with some medical stuff, but I am back!

Here some of the stuff I'm following! Check the big list and see what strikes your fancy! Or, you know, the sub-fancy. That whole area.

Cull #3 - Still love the art, not sure on the story yet, seems like a slow start.

Danger Street #10 - Getting near the end, hope it starts making sense soon. ;)

Green Lantern #4 - Glad to see it's recovered from the 2 month crossover hiatus

Hunger And The Dusk #3 - Been decent high fantasy so far!

Madness #3 - Wait... did I miss #2?

Magneto #3 - 80s Vintage professor Magneto.

Moon Knight City Of The Dead #4 - I'm torn, on the one hand, this is the sequel to the TV show and it works!

Not All Robots TP (New Edition) - Super good read if you missed the individual issues.

Spider-Man India #5 - Final issue! Been fun! Womdering how long it will take for him to jump to the 616. ;)

Superboy The Man Of Tomorrow #6 - Wrapping up this series of the New Dawn Super-Stories.

Superman Lost #7 - The PTSD Supes story is one of the best in years

Wesley Dodds The Sandman #1 - Really looking forward to this. Golden Age Sandman, Flash, and Green Lantern are getting their own 6 issue minis!

World’s Finest Teen Titans #4 - Love the vintage look on this run.
