When I was younger, I believed there was a good chance that it was an inside job - the CIA, specifically. This was the only conspiracy theory I ever took seriously.
Now, my beliefs are much closer to yours.

I only used reddit for casual purposes, so breaking my habit was easy. I haven’t been back since I created an account here.
For the first few days, it was out of contempt for that site, but now it’s because I’ve realized that online communities don’t have to be toxic, confrontational battlegrounds. I don’t miss the reddit “culture” AT ALL.
The issue continued during the day shift. ‘They emailed dayshift workers at 7 AM to not come to work when the starting time is 7:45 AM, so many were already on site or on their way to work,’ explains Hannah.
Many workers travel to the Bristol site from the Newport area, roughly an hour and a half away. GMB union organiser Marie McDonald says workers were told to go home and advised that they would be paid for the day. But at about half past twelve, they received a message from the site saying that the water was back on, and they were expected to be on-site by one o’clock. ‘You’ve got to bear in mind that a lot of our members travel great distances to get to work. The bus stop in Newport is not centrally located. They have to walk for half an hour, so many couldn’t get on the bus in time to get back to Bristol,’ she tells Tribune.
One of our members, who couldn’t physically get to the site, was told they would have to take annual leave if they couldn’t get to the site. She doesn’t have any annual leave, so she’s being penalised for an issue completely out of her control. As far as I’m concerned, Amazon is putting productivity over staff safety.’
That sounds “absolutely reasonable”to you? Really? I hope I never work for someone with standards like that.
Some redditors just bring the worst of reddit with them when coming to the fediverse, like tracking mud into the house. Some are still recovering, and slowly acclimating to the fact that you don’t have to be an overly defensive, argumentative prick all the time. Some just stay that way because it’s all they know. Some are still learning that every difference of opinion doesn’t have to become a tiresome debate. Some are OK people. Some are just plain assholes.
As a reddit refugee, I’m in that paragraph somewhere. I’m only half joking when I call it PRSD - Post Reddit Stress Disorder.
Apparently “superglass” is even better. It’s like glass, but super.
The universe is much, much more complex than we can comprehend. As humanity learns more, the old categories and frameworks we use to try and organize and understand things will break down.
This is not a bad thing. It is a sign of progress.
Years ago, I read a great piece of advice (they were talking about a home landline, but the meaning still applies): “The telephone is there for your convenience, not the caller’s.”
I’m concerned for that 17 year old, but I’m much more worried for my infant niece.
I need to get better at editing myself.
I assume it’s to help people visualize volume/distance/size/etc. If an article said “50,000 gallons”, it would be much more precise, but also harder to relate to. When an article says “500 Olympic-sized pools”, it’s significantly easier to picture in my mind.
It’s also worth remembering that this is a newspaper intended for the casual edification of the general public, not a scientific document.
Take it easy. I’m referring to consulate jobs, international business, and such. Usually, if you’re qualified for that, you have other options that don’t require moving to a police state.
I just watched White House Plumbers a few weeks ago, an HBO miniseries about Hunt and Liddy’s ridiculous fuckup at Watergate.
