Had to Google this one (Mark Webber 2010 crash for the curious).
Good lord, I can't believe he survived that. Those machines are built to crash and walk away from.
Those drivers are freaking talented and ridiculously brave people but damn. That is one of the few dreams I would shoot down for my son.
Remember that you can tell him you're too poor for that. Because even to get in the supporting classes you need to be quite a bit more than just "wealthy".

Just last year, a similar incident happened to Fernando Alonso. He spectacularly managed to land his car, continued with minor damage and secured a P7. Then the FIA tried to take it away from him for a regulation breach but his team protested and they kept the result.
