From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).

Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word "Linux" in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy.

  • Multimedia/ h264 codecs ??
  • KDE/GSconnect
  • Something like Arch's downgrade package + an archive of package versions
  • Hardware video acceleration support is sorely lacking
  • Picture-in-picture in Gnome's Wayland (bug that a gnome-shell extension fixes!)

The codecs thing is wack. I can explain to people that maybe their distro doesn't come with a video player because the idea is that they get to choose their preference, but I've lost once I have to also explain that none of their video files will even work since they didn't also install codecs.

It's crazy that Linux distros think that installing codecs is a reasonable expectation for users. Especially users new to Linux.
