My favorite thing I learned while researching for writing was that hunter-gatherers worked less hours than the modern human ๐Ÿ™ƒ

iirc the article stated 'work' as when they hunted, not for stuff like cooking and crafting

To be fair, there were a lot fewer people then, so they didn't have to compete for resources as much, and you could get a nice cave for dirt cheap

Parents: you need to read lots of book in your free time to get smart and go to collage.

~~~ Many years later ~~~
Me: I would like to attend university next year. I will pursue an education in literature to achieve my goal of becoming a published author.
Parents: you will not! There is no success as an author, I will not support you going to to school for such a waste.
You really don't need a degree in literature to become a published author. That's like getting a degree in media studies so you can become a youtuber. Yeah, you could do it, and it may give you some advantages, but like... You're already literate, right? Besides that, taking a class or two on literature or creative writing would give you a lot of the skills you need to get you on your way, which you can easily do while pursuing another degree that ensures greater monetary security or (less easily) at a community college while also working.
I'm not saying that the system that begets this thinking is good, but it is the one we live under.
I know...college is a joke for a lot of careers.
I made up this situation pointing out the opposing stereotypes of books and authors.
Reads lots of books = smart person who has lots of potential in life.
Writes lots of books = bum who can barley pay rent.
I was going to ignore it but then you did it again and so now I can't help but be a pedantic ass: it's spelled "college". Collage is those art pieces made of scraps of other art/media
Yeah, the first time was for the joke. Second time must have been umm autocorrect.
I am defiantly not making things up to excuse my poor spelling...what can I say? I made a double oops 0ops.
You're technically correct.
That's the best kind of correct.
and go to collage.
This is who I want telling me reading is bad
[-] [email protected] 3 points 5 days ago
It's an extremely large collage, they have to charge admission to afford the maintenance on it.
English degrees are great if you plan to go into law.
To earn money while hoping you make it as an author because otherwise you'll either starve or become an office clerk.
I read and write, so I imagine I look like the tip picture, but really I look like the bottom.
[-] [email protected] 14 points 6 days ago
I don't think being on Lemmy counts as reading and writing. hehe
I agree with the comedy image.
The only thing worse than the squalor of addiction is the unearned confidence of people with glasses.
[-] [email protected] 7 points 5 days ago
Dammit.
Back to contacts I guess.
[-] [email protected] 12 points 6 days ago
My to-read list proves that people who read are addicts too
[-] [email protected] 4 points 6 days ago
Yeah but you still afford clothes while whittling down that list ๐Ÿ˜œ
So fucking true! Meaning we are poor and always a little crazy.
I am a German born American who worked for the post office. Still fighting my alcoholic demons but Iโ€™ll have something to write about when Iโ€™m done.
if I can't read I won't have to learn about the horrors of the world
I LOL'ed at the writer Pic, not sure why, but LOL
Probably because that's the punchline of the joke. That was the designer's intent, so, good job!
