How do you not know what an awning is?

Not being a native english speaker?

So they have a different name for it, but awnings are fairly universal... at least in every country I've ever traveled to.

It’s part of the joke. Even if the author did not know how it is called, they were able to find the image of it on internet and make this meme. So, for sure if they wanted, they would be able to find the word itself in fraction of time it took to create the image.

Cave dweller, perhaps?

Hint: Most memes are probably not made by adults.

Have they never been to a restaurant, retail shop in a downtown area, or countless other businesses? My local hospital even has awnings over some of the entrances.

They've clearly seen them before, at least on tv, but that is different from learning what they are called. It's not too unusual to just not know the name of something, and then you have to describe it to people instead of just naming it.

"awning" is not a particularly common word, like say, "kitchen" or something. I kinda doubt most, say, 14 year olds know that word.

Jackie Chan is a cartoon character, because he fell on an awning.
